JANET JACKSON Acrylics JanetJackson@IStillBelieve.com Artist Statement Though I have no formal training in art it seems as though I have “danced” at the edge of the art world my whole life. While in my twenties, I began to be proactive with decorative painting and ultimately competed at the National Society of Decorative Painters and was awarded my certification. I participated in various shows in the area until 1995 when I opened a shop / studio in Princeville, Illinois, “I Still Believe.” I designed pieces, created custom works, and participated in gift markets in Atlanta and Chicago marketing various products in the wholesale arena. In Atlanta I was awarded one of the eighteen “Best in Visual Booth Display” awards out of 4000 entries. One of my items was gifted to Oprah and now hangs in her office. Three years ago Rita Kress, a local business woman, retained me to work on special events and art projects. In February 2010 I assisted in making the arrangements for bringing Barbara Walters to the Creve Coeur Club’s George Washington’s Day Banquet. Barbara was gifted with one of my jewelry designs, a silver necklace with letters spelling “View”, and she has been seen wearing it several times on her program. Planning and decorating for weddings, Boy Scouts functions and zoo events have been some of my recent challenges. Volunteering at the Contemporary Art Center and helping with the openings and galas have also provided new creative outlets. Being very busy assisting with Rita’s many efforts and functions has necessitated operating my shop by appointment only. I have won gold and silver ADDY Awards here and regionally for some of my invitation and program designs. In 2007 my designs for the Boy Scouts of America won first in the nation. This has been a fun twist in my ever expanding whirl wind with art. As for fine art I have always enjoyed drawing people, and the encouragement of artist Preston Jackson has led me down a new path. I have assisted Preston with several of his endeavors, and his mentoring continues to direct this latest artistic evolvement. As I begin consideration of a new subject I try to focus on each person’s history and life story. Though using a very realistic style I hope to capture much more than just their image. We shall see where this newest adventure with art will lead. Until then, the “Dance” continues. |
